You’ve probably heard the phrase “Consistency is key” more times than you can count and when it comes to your little one’s sleep, it’s definitely true. But let’s be real: how do you stay consistent when you’re already running on fumes? Let’s dive into why sticking with it really makes all the difference for your baby’s sleep, and for your sanity.
Why Consistency Really Works
Consistency is the foundation for creating a calm and predictable sleep environment for your baby or toddler. I believe that little one's thrive on routine and predictability, as it helps them feel safe and secure.
The sense of familiarity that comes with consistency, helps them understand what’s coming next, reducing any anxiety or confusion that might make falling asleep more difficult. Over time, consistency builds trust, and your little one learns to associate their sleep space with comfort and security, making it easier for them to fall asleep and stay asleep.
What Happens When Things Aren’t Consistent?
When your routine is inconsistent, it can leave your baby or toddler feeling a little unsure. They might not fully get what’s going on, which makes adjusting a bit trickier. Think of it like trying to build a house without a foundation, it’s just not as sturdy.
But when you’re consistent, you’re creating a sense of calm and predictability and .you’re making it easier for them to adjust, which will lead to them feeling more comfortable in their sleep space.
Consistency Doesn’t Mean No Flexibility
Now, here’s the good news, consistency doesn’t mean rigid. I often incorporate flexibility within my tailored sleep advice. Life happens, and some days will look different than others, whether it's school drop off, playgroup or a trip to the shops.. The key is ensuring that, even with the small changes, you maintain an overall consistent approach.
Flexibility allows you to adapt to your family’s needs while still giving your baby or toddler the predictable sleep patterns & cues they need to feel secure.
Trust the Process With Baby & Toddler Sleep (You’ve Got This!)
I know it can feel tough, especially when you’re in the trenches of sleep deprivation and now these new changes. But hang in there! The first 10 days are key to laying the foundation for better sleep.
So take a deep breath, trust yourself, and trust the process. Give it 10 days and then take a step back to see how things are going. You’re laying the groundwork for long-term, restful sleep, and your consistency is a huge part of making it work.
